Tutorial: Resolving the dreaded Red X when embedding Macromedia Flash inside of a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation (Step 2)

First of all, check the version of the component and the version of your movie. (If you don't know how to find the component, please see the first tutorial.) By getting properties on the component, you can tell what version of Flash it supports. If you're trying to run a Flash 4 movie format on a Flash 3 component, you could get the red X.

Remember, the ActiveX component may be different on every machine on which this presentation is run. So unless you need some Flash 4 functionality, it may be best to save the movie as Flash 3. If you've embedded the movie and you have component version conflict, you'll need to walk through the embedding routine again.
